This is another non-verbal misunderstanding, though here Conrad calls attention
to it only with a colon. Mrs Gould approves of Charles for eschewing wealth in
favor of what she sees as a sympathetic obligation to his father's "misery."
But Charles' dedication is really to something much more abstract and inhuman:
an ideal of justice.
