We have jumped straight from noon to sunset. Noon represented the death of the
dream, corresponding not only to Mr Gould's death but also in a sense to the death
of their youth, while sunset represents the birth of the dream -- in this case,
the dream of their life together in Costaguana. Incidentally, the jump in time
presupposes an inordinately long period of silence between them -- a foreshadowing
of their later life.
