Italy is a frequent counterpoint to Costaguana in the novel: it is also Nostromo's
birthplace and the scene of Giorgio Viola's campaigning. Conrad seems to be holding
Italy up as an example of a country utterly wrecked by centuries of futile politics
and strife.
