Deprived of this knowledge (in a novel where much more trivial motives are revealed
to us), we are encouraged to at least experiment with taking the proclamation
at face value. Despite its tone reeking of grandiloquent hypocrisy, its allegations
are perfectly correct and its remedy is morally sound (albeit infinite in duration).
