Viola's house ("The Inn of United Italy," though we don't know its name
yet) is symbolic of his ideal of the unified Republican nation. Note that Viola
is forced out of the house when the failure of his ideal is mentioned, chased
out, no less, by a cloud of "acrid" smoke, suggesting a retreat from
warfare.
