This line again hints at the thematic dream-ideal, which will come to be portrayed
as a "terrible" thing indeed. The phrase "personal quality"
is also an early clue; as the novel progresses we shall see that the dream-ideal
is deeply personal -- unique, subjective and ultimately irreconcilable
with those of others. Note the listeners' nudging immunity to Giorgio's passion.
