A political theme of the novel is that the industrial and commercial revolution, while claiming to be based entirely on unsentimental facts, is actually a dream-ideal no different in essence from a religion. The O.S.N.'s commercial fleet operating in the name of "all mythology" gives us our first glimpse of this tension.
