Night in Nostromo, especially night in the Placid Gulf, represents total
immersion in the illusory dream-ideal, to the extent of complete disconnection
from reality and even doubt in the existence of the physical world. The unseen
ship in this sentence prefigures the more dramatic language of elimination that
pervades the scene of Nostromo and Decoud in the lighter.
